They Say I Say
Chase
Baker
They say I say protein bars
They say that protein bars are
only for the bodybuilders among us. They say that only people obsessed with
their bodies use them. They say that they taste like chalk. They also they that
they are unreasonably priced and not worth it. Also look out for excessive
calories, protein bars may contribute to a high caloric intake, which can lead
to weight gain. Protein bars if eaten in place of whole foods, can make your
body not get the vitamins and minerals it needs because they fill you up
without eating a full meal. That’s what
the general population says. In contrast, health advocates say that can help
you live a healthy life. That the bars can fill excess calories and give a
boost of protein in the day when you need it to fill you up or help your
muscles recover after a workout.
From an article on Black Doctor.org, the author leans
towards that protein bars are not good, saying that they are not necessary at
all. He offers better alternatives in their eyes to protein bars like fresh
fruits such as apples, oranges, pears, plums, grapes, bananas, yogurt or string
cheese, and bagels and muffins. He also says that the bars can give you excessive
calorie counts. Regarding fitness and pre/post workout, he says: “Energy bars
are usually too high in protein, fat, fiber, and possibly sugar alcohols to be
used for pre-exercise nourishment.” And also: “After your exercise session,
your body needs mostly carbohydrates (to replenish glycogen stores in the
muscles), some protein (to help repair damaged muscle tissue), and a little fat
(for cellular repair). Eating a “real” and complete meal is your best bet.” He only
really gives the green light on protein bars when they are used as a post
workout and you have no other alternatives available. He strongly is against
them as an afternoon snack, saying that they are like candy bars. He finishes
by saying that the price of protein bars is way too high, mentioning that protein
bars can cost up to three times more than whole foods containing an equivalent
amount of protein.
I say that they can include ingredients that offer
carbohydrates, fats, vitamins or minerals to bolster your intake of these
nutrients, and come in a variety of flavors for improved taste. They contribute
essential amino acids (amino acids that our body doesn’t make on its own) to
your diet to help you build and maintain muscle mass, repair wounds or damaged
tissues and manufacture both hormones and enzymes. They can also supply energy
in the form of carbohydrates or fats, as well as vitamins or minerals for
supporting your overall health. Because protein bars need no refrigeration or
preparation, they make a convenient on-the-go snack, small meal replacement, or
as a post workout snack. Depending on your fitness goals, they can offer a
boost of protein for relatively few calories when you are trying to lose
weight, or additional nutrients to augment your regular meal plan when you are
adding to your body mass. As long as you are healthy and your diet is well
balanced and not trying to lose weight or gain mass, I think protein bars are
not a necessary component of your nutrition. I like them for their portability
and ease of use after my workouts so I can get some quick, high quality
protein. I would use protein powder over protein bars if I had to buy them from
a retail store because the price per scoop is much lower than the price per bar,
but since I am making them myself I can make them much cheaper, much healthier,
and in less time than going to the store. I also feel better eating them
because I know all the ingredients being put in so there is no added sugars or preservatives.

Mentor Blog
This weekend was the first weekend where I used my homemade protein bars after my workouts. I also established my dad as a mentor as he has extensive knowledge of food and how to affects our bodies when we eat. He cooks almost every meal for my family and makes them all nutritious and tasty. Trust me, he spends way too much money on our grocery bill. He have me a few tips on how to preserve the bars longer and make them taste better this weekend. I had a track meet on Saturday and after I had one of my protein bars to get my muscles into recovery mode. The bar had about 30 grams of protein and filled me right up. I hadn't eaten for about 8 hours, and after I ate that bar I wasn't hunger. I actually lost weight when i weighed myself the next day. I looked online and I found that eating lots of protein makes you feel more full. Now maybe as a side objective for my project I can see if my bars actually make me lose weight by making me for full. What's next for my project is to continue to have one bar each day when I get home from track and none when I don't workout. I want to tweak my recipe and use vanilla protein powder instead and see how those tastes. Also i'm going to add more milk to make the bars softer and less chewy. Another option is to cut the milk altogether and add a substitute to give the bars a longer shelf life.

Project update
Right now I'm gonna change my project as I really don't have any motivation to continue my current project. I'm going to change it too making my own protein bars and powder for use in shakes. I'll buy in bulk then produce at a lower price and sell them for a low price. I'll probably video myself making them and explaining how everyone can make them. Then I'll give updates on how I'm feeling using it. I want to do this because I haven't been using protein because it's expensive and I want a low cost alternative. I'll do my video on expressing a low cost protein that people can use to get more if they don't already and to athletes who want a low cost alternative. I'll prepare by making videos in my kitchen making my protein and promoting my idea. I'm still thinking about the final pitch but I have a good idea

They say I say
They say that AP is the right way to go. They say that AP is their champion. They say hay AP should be taken by everyone. They champion AP participates with medals and honors and they even hold a special assembly to display Their crowning achievement, the AP program. Every year they push you to take more AP as it only benefits you now and the future.
But the leaf group in "Pro's and con's of AP classes" say differently. AP is not the class the class that most should be taking. Kids might not be ready for it academically or emotionally. They say "some students may think they are ready but then feel overwhelmed once the class begins." Leaf group also says that even if you do pass the exam, they might not give you credit. Instead, they make you take a advanced class instead.
I say that AP is not all that it seems. Rigorous AP courses can overstress students with increased workload before considering outside forces that can affect time spent on studying like jobs, chores, sports, arts, and guess what, even other classes. Kennedy champions AP so much because increased numbers in AP and exams passed give the school more money and can boast that we are the number one school in Iowa. Many colleges now don't even accept scores of 3's anymore, as a 4 and especially a 5 is much harder. This increased workload can affect other classes by lower time spent on them, which will lead to lower grades and lower GPA. When applying for scholarships, a high GPA and good ACT are much more important than AP classes taken.

Blog 3 progress
So far for my 20 time project I've been working on my syllabus. I've gotten the introduction done mostly besides telling what the class will be over during the semester as I still need to confirm precisely what I'm doing, and I've started the class rules and point breakdown. I already know what the rest will be over so I should finish it this Friday. I've gotten almost all of my information to write every lesson plan also, so when the syllabus is done that's what I'll start too do. The next part will be to find a online calendar that in everyday I can write lesson plans, projects, and homework in. If I can't find that I'll just buy a physical copy of a 16-17 calendar and write stuff into there, but that is far less optimal. If I don't finish the syllabus this Friday then I will have to readjust my schedule for finishing.

Check-in
Chase, this is so interesting. Do you have aspirations to be a teacher? If so, which level would you like to teach at? As you plan, consider who guinea pigs might be as well as someone who could serve as a mentor.
Remind me on Monday and I will hook you up with a plan book. I don't think the district even has a calendar ready for next year to be honest.

week 2
1. How would I acquire a blank 2016-2017 Kennedy high school calendar?
2.What is a recommended or usually implemented point breakdown for an astronomy class?
3.What kind of rules should be in place? (cell phones for example)
4. What kind of activities can I do besides PowerPoints or labs?
5. What kind of things could I talk about to fill up an entire year?

Blog Post 1
My proposal for the 20 time project was to create a class. I personally wanted to create an astronomy class, because there's so many things to talk about and I'm really interested in it. I would create a class syllabus and outline, constructed from this school years schedule. I was thinking that I'd only do one semester but to increase the length of the project I will probably make it a year long course. I'd create a day to day lesson plan and create specific labs, tests and projects. To compliment this, for every week, I'd create a PowerPoint for at least one day of that week. The feedback that I received was mostly positive and they wanted me to do a class for my presentation, create a PowerPoint and teach them some stuff. I think that'd be a good idea, but not sure how I'd fit a whole presentation on what I've learned and teach them things in 10 minutes. My personal goal for this was too learn about something that I love and learn just a little bit about what teachers do, with the ultimate end goal of actually presenting my syllabus and outline with my PowerPoints to Kline and get him too consider the class for Kennedy. So far, I've accomplished my goal of finding out a project that can sustain through multiple months, and nothing has went wrong. *knocks on wood* I'd like to start my syllabus when we start working on this probably, as that seems like a good first step.
